Hello, My name is Mr. Gleeson and I am honored to be your son or daughter's physical education teacher. This year I will be teaching 5-8th grade.
The first two weeks of class we are doing a lot of team building and getting to know you type activities and games. I am working very hard to learn the names of all my students as quickly as I can. We will be having a quiz over the syllabus and rules this second week. It is very important your son or daughter is wearing proper athletic shoes on the days they have PE. As you know, it has been extremely hot so far this year and we have been inside the majority of the time. As it cools down a little we will be going outside more often. You are encouraged to send your child with a refillabe water bottle and even a hat and/or sunglasses on days we will be outside.
Next week we will begin our fitness testing. We will be talking about their body composition (skinfold of calf and arm), cardiovascular endurance (PACER), abdominal strength (curl-ups), upper body strength (push ups), back strength (trunk lift) and flexiblility (sit and reach and shoulder stretch).

In PE we have talked about the 5 Fitness Components (Body Composition, Cardiovascular endurance, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, and Flexibility), 6 Skill Related Components (Speed, Agility, Power, Balance, Coordination and Reaction Time). We reviewed the food groups and went over MyPlate information. We also discussed and gave examples of the F.I.T.T. principle (Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type of exercises).
We are beginning with exploring and practicing our sports this week. We are beginning with basketball and will be followed by football and soccer. Each week we will be starting a new sport to introduce them to and practice the basics of the sport.
During our basketball week, we worked on ball control (dribbling), passing, and shooting. We shot baskets and determined if they were to eat the number of servings for each basket made was sufficient for each food group. The students learned an 11 man drill that focuses on a 3 vs 2 fast break. After the initial learning curve of the rotation, the students did really well with the drill. The students took a quiz at the end of the week.
During our football week, we discussed and took a quiz over basic rules of the game and the big idea of the game. On the offensive side, we ran pass patterns such as curls, outs, ins, posts, flags, slants, and streaks. We practiced throwing and catching daily. On the defensive side, we practiced man to man defensive coverage.
During our soccer week, we discussed the big idea and the rules of the game. We focused on ball control by dribbling and juggling the ball. We practiced passing and trapping the ball. We integrated the 6 noble gases into the routine and footwork skills to improve ball handling. We played modified games focusing on ball control. We took shots on the goal and if students wanted to, they had a chance to defend the goal by being keeper. We will be spending two weeks on the soccer unit. The students will be quizzed on the basic rules of the game.
During our Ultimate Frisbee weeks, we discussed the big idea and rules of the game. The "Spirit of the Game" was stressed and the students really enjoyed leaning the game and developing new skills.
We will be playing scoops, a baseball like game (Over the line), volleyball, and dodge ball. We will finish the semester by re-testing the same fitness test to see the growth they accomplished throughout the year.
